Karigane is kukicha made from the good stems — those separated from gyokuro or high-grade sencha rather than from everyday leaf. Because the parent plants were shade-grown, the stems carry that same theanine sweetness, and the cup is noticeably rounder and more umami-rich than ordinary twig tea. In Kyoto it is also known as shiraore, and it has long been the tea drinkers' own tea: modest by weight next to gyokuro, but made from the same material. Brew it cooler than kukicha to keep the sweetness forward, and give it two or three infusions. It is low enough in caffeine to drink right through the afternoon.

How to Make
Karigane Like a Pro

Shipping is free once your order passes the threshold for your country — USD 54.99 · EUR 54.99 · GBP 44.99 · CHF 49.99 · CAD 74.99 · DKK 399 · SEK 599 · PLN 229 · CZK 1,290. We ship from warehouses in the US, the EU and Japan — whichever is closest to you. US and EU orders arrive in 4–12 business days; the handful of countries served from Japan take around 10. Business days count from dispatch rather than from when you order, and exclude weekends and public holidays. You'll get a tracking number by email the moment your parcel leaves the warehouse.

We only buy from fields grown without pesticides or chemicals. We ask each farmer directly how they manage their land, visit the plantation and processing facility ourselves, taste every harvest before committing, and check that the biodiversity around the fields is alive. Small family farms don't always carry paperwork — so we verify it in person instead.

Japanese green tea covers an enormous range, and choosing online isn't easy. If you've tried yours and it isn't for you, email info@nioteas.com within 30 days with your order number and a line on what you didn't enjoy. We'll send a different tea of equal or lower value, free. Nothing to post back — keep it, share it, or try brewing it cooler. Once per order.

Email info@nioteas.com within 30 days with your order number and a photo. We'll approve it, cover the return postage with a prepaid label or a reimbursement, and refund you — no restocking fee. Refunds go to your original payment method within 2 business days of the return reaching us; your bank may take another 5–20 to show it.

Unopened items in their original packaging can be returned within 30 days. Tea is sealed for hygiene, so opened packs can't come back — but the swap above covers exactly that situation. Return postage is yours unless the item arrived damaged, defective or incorrect.

Orders to the US and EU ship domestically from our local warehouse, so there's no customs charge and no duty. A small number of destinations are served from our Japan warehouse, where your own customs authority may apply import duty, VAT or a carrier handling fee on delivery. Those are set by your country, not by us. Ask before you order and we'll help you check.

Such a lovely tea! Vibrant green color, even despite this being the second brew. Gentle caffeine level. Gorgeous packaging—I always appreciate Nio Tea’s informative labeling with the quantity of tea to measure, temperature of water, and time for brewing. I’ve been loyal to Nio Teas for years, thank you for curating such divine teas! ♥️

Ahh this tea (Gyokuro Karigane) is beyond delicious! The sweetness really hit me with first sip.. then other tasting notes. Its divine, my favourite so far. I will be trying to ease off coffee so this will be a perfect replacement 🍵

Customer photo review of Gyokuro Karigane

I am trying to find a great Japanese loose leaf green tea that does well using the Cold Brew method. Nio’s video recommended Gyrokuro Karigane and Sencha with matcha. This picture is the 2nd and 3rd brew… the first brew has been thoroughly enjoyed! I did add an extra gram of tea this time to the recommended 5 grams, 6 grams for 500ml of room temp filtered water in a jar, then put in fridge for 1 hour. The second brew I leave for 3 hours and then decant into another jar of my lovely matching reused jarred fruit jars….not pretty but the size is just right! I do like the strength of 6 grams vs 5 so I can add just a couple of ice cubes so as not to dilute it too much. I am very pleased with the 2 cold brew recommendations and will order again shortly. I like to do multiple brews of a couple different strengths of teas to drink in descending order of caffeine throughout the day. Very nice teas! Thoroughly enjoying!

Gyokuro Karigane! I have been drinking this stem tea for quite a long time and I still think it’s the best tea. I like to be able to enjoy a Gyokuro with less caffeine and the Karigane is a perfect combination.

I was nonplussed, at first, because of the tea's unfamiliar appearance. But my goodness, the flavor is delightful. Make sure the water is well-filtered, because the taste of chloramine ruins a cup of tea. I use water at about 60° C. (140° F.), and steep the first pour for 2min. Delicious!

The karigane is wonderful hot or this time of the year as a cold brew. Its very refreshing and reminds me of spring flowers. Its especially nice as a late afternoon treat because its lower in caffeine. I will brew a cup now!😊

Customer photo review of Gyokuro Karigane

the freshness of the leaves truly smell amazing, sea-weedy, buttery, rich. Only few drops of the first steep is enough to feel the explosion of the umaminess. it’s fresh and has a slightly pleasant bitterness. The aroma is vegetal, has this “sea breeze” effect. The aftertaste is seaweed and has a tiny peachy touch. Sweet and long lasting tea

Gyokuro Karigane

Customer photo review of Gyokuro Karigane

Sweet, bright and savory aromas in the dry leaves. Leaves are very pretty. 5 grams, 60℃, 1 minute. Infusion unleashes a spinach flavor and a nice green in the liquor. Like many Japanese teas, the leaves are super absorbent. This tea contains lots of stems. It's sweet and warming.

Customer photo review of Gyokuro Karigane

I don't know how this tea got any 3 and 4 star reviews it's fantastic! I really like this one hot and cold especially in the afternoon

Gyokuro Karigane

It’s sweet with veggie undertones. My first experience drinking Gyokuro tea. Will try some of the other Gyokuro teas in the near future.

Gyokuro Karigane

I didn’t realize that it had small twigs/stems in it initially when I ordered it and was a little bit concerned when I opened the package… But this stuff is delicious. I love it. It is now my preferred tea so I’m ordering more!. It has a very nice subtle sweetness to it.

Gyokuro Karigane

This tea surprised me. It holds quite a few stems. One could almost call it "Kuki-kuro" or "Gyo-kuki". Forgive me. but it seems to me like the perfect blend between Gyokuro and Kukicha, one get's the flavor and sweetness expected of a Gyokuro tea with the minerality of a Kukicha. An excellent choice when one wants plenty flavor but a little less caffeine.

Gyokuro Karigane

I really like the grassiness in the taste

Gyokuro Karigane

Im going to keep it short and sweet...its a damn good tea. Damn good!!

Gyokuro Karigane

This green tea is absolutely wonderful! The flavor is incredibly fresh and calming. I love it and will definitely be ordering more."

Gyokuro Karigane

Not just my favorite stem tea, but one of my very favorite teas, period.

Gyokuro Karigane

Gyokuro Karigane

Sweeter and lighter than the "full grain" gyokuro, but not unpleasant. I found I needed a bit more tea per cup.

Gyokuro Karigane

I like this when I need a little more caffeine kick and has a great flavor. I can only drink it once in while because I get a lot of migraines so I have to be careful of my caffeine intake. For some reason when I do drink this I get really thirsty after. I don’t know if that’s just me or if anyone else has experienced that with the gyokuro teas.

Gyokuro Karigane

Gyokuro Karigane

Not the usual Gyokuro style, but very palatable.

Nio Teas!! I love every purchase I’ve made. I look forward to making and thoroughly enjoying my high quality loose leaf green tea or matcha. Love you all and most especially my tea!!!

Gyokuro Karigane

I'm new to tea so really don't know the difference between good and mediocre. Am drinking for the purported health benefits.

Gyokuro Karigane

What a lovely light easy drinking tea, worth the wait!

Gyokuro Karigane

So nice to spoil myself a bit now that the weather is chilly. My order came very quickly.

Gyokuro Karigane

I love the mild flavor of this tea!

Gyokuro Karigane

After tasting all the teas in the NIO sampler, this stem tea - Gyokuro Karigane was in the top three! Subtle sweetness and vegetal notes make this a fine morning tea or afternoon tea. I brew longer than recommended to bring out a fuller flavor. Feel free to experiment with brewing times.
