Hojicha is green tea roasted after processing, traditionally in a porcelain pot or a rotating drum, at temperatures high enough to turn the leaf from green to reddish brown. The roast drives off much of the tea's caffeine and catechins along with its grassiness, leaving a cup that is nutty, toasty and almost entirely free of bitterness or astringency. It was a Kyoto invention of the 1920s, a way to make use of leaf and stem that would otherwise have been sold cheaply, and it became the tea Japanese families drink in the evening and serve to children. Brew it hot and briefly — unlike most green teas it will not punish you for near-boiling water. The liquor is amber rather than green, and the aroma fills a room.

A small tea field in the countryside outside Kyoto.
Fermier: Noikeさん
Mr. Noike is a skilled farmer located outside of Kyoto. Originally from Tokyo, he chose a more serene life in the Japanese countryside, where he passionately tends his small tea field and immerses himself in the art and intricacies of tea farming.
Why Organic Hojicha Fields Make a Difference

We ship from warehouses in the US, the EU and Japan — whichever is closest to you. US and EU orders arrive in 4–12 business days; the handful of countries served from Japan take around 10. Business days count from dispatch rather than from when you order, and exclude weekends and public holidays. You'll get a tracking number by email the moment your parcel leaves the warehouse.
We only buy from fields grown without pesticides or chemicals. We ask each farmer directly how they manage their land, visit the plantation and processing facility ourselves, taste every harvest before committing, and check that the biodiversity around the fields is alive. Small family farms don't always carry paperwork — so we verify it in person instead.
Japanese green tea covers an enormous range, and choosing online isn't easy. If you've tried yours and it isn't for you, email info@nioteas.com within 30 days with your order number and a line on what you didn't enjoy. We'll send a different tea of equal or lower value, free. Nothing to post back — keep it, share it, or try brewing it cooler. Once per order.
Email info@nioteas.com within 30 days with your order number and a photo. We'll approve it, cover the return postage with a prepaid label or a reimbursement, and refund you — no restocking fee. Refunds go to your original payment method within 2 business days of the return reaching us; your bank may take another 5–20 to show it.
Unopened items in their original packaging can be returned within 30 days. Tea is sealed for hygiene, so opened packs can't come back — but the swap above covers exactly that situation. Return postage is yours unless the item arrived damaged, defective or incorrect.
Orders to the US and EU ship domestically from our local warehouse, so there's no customs charge and no duty. A small number of destinations are served from our Japan warehouse, where your own customs authority may apply import duty, VAT or a carrier handling fee on delivery. Those are set by your country, not by us. Ask before you order and we'll help you check.
This tea Hojicha is one that I was especially eager to sample, as I had never had one before. This is a roasted green tea, however they only use the stems and not the leaves, which produces a very low caffeine tea. It was a very thick, sweet, roasty tea and very reminiscent of a roasted Tie Guan Yin or Tie Louhan in every olfactory aspect. A good gateway tea for people who are used to those sweeter teas and good for late-afternoon or before bed due to the low caffeine content. It was a bit cloudy and cool this morning, too so it just happened to match the weather!
There are no strong aromas on the dry leaves, but the tea looks great and has a lot of stems, giving it somewhat of a camping vibe. The infusion is 5g, 70℃, 60 seconds, which yields a satisfying bright amber color that's lighter than most hojichas I've tried. It's smooth and pleasant, with a less overpowering roastedness than a lot of hojichas, and leaving a brown sugar aftertaste in the throat. The second infusion is more full-bodied.
I am using this as a replacement for Lipton tea bags for my iced tea. I am really enjoying the tea cold brewed! I am not sure about it being brewed as hot tea yet. It’s a different taste, probably for me it will have to be an acquired taste as I am looking for a replacement for coffee. I will be ordering more pretty soon for my cold brew tea😊
Being a new tea drinker when I first opened the bag I was like wow this looks like a bunch of bark. It’s delicious! Slight nutty flavor, no bitterness. Will buy again
I am 90 years old and have to drink decaffeinated tea and coffee. To find a delicious tea like this brings joy to an old man's heart. You information on your site which shows the caffein levels is truly a gift. Thank you.
I'm new to trying loose leaf green tea and so glad I found Nio teas. Their youtube channel helped so much. So far tried the Sencha and Hojicha and both were very good.
This tea taste about how you would expect, like a green tea, but roasted. I wasn't so sure about it at first and was having trouble getting the full flavour out of it but I ended up really loving it. I would recommend it at 70-75 degrees Celsius for 1-2 minutes with 5g per 150ml of water. It says 20 seconds for the 2nd and 3rd steeps but I like to really taste my tea so i brew it longer and also go up to about 6 steeps before I give it up.
A delicious tea for the afternoon with a smooth smokey taste that reminds me of chocolate with an light aftertaste of blackberries. Even the third infusion produces distinct tastes and is not bland at all. I also like the option of the big pieces of dark brown leaves and stems. Arigato gozaimasu Mr. Noike.
This is a delicious hojicha! Very toasty and rich, survives multiple steeps with ease. Super low caffeine content makes this the perfect cup for late in the day. Highly recommended!
The delivery took weeks to reach me. As with all green teas, watch the temperature, the time and the amount. Eventually I got it correct for my taste buds. The flavor can be rustic, slightly bitter to mild.
